Still reeling from the epicness that is Star Trek Into Darkness, I went ahead and searched for tags for #Khan expecting a bunch of Benedict Cumberbatch appreciation posts. Boy, was I wrong.

Apparently, there are many people who are in an uproar that Benedict Cumberbatch portrayed Khan…

Yeah I mean no-one complained when Samuel L. Jackson was cast as Nick Fury when the original character’s white.

And the amount of caucasian DNA floating in the Asian gene pool thanks to a couple of centuries of British, Spanish and Portuguese colonialism seems to have passed everyone by.

A 2003 genetic study suggested that up to 1 in 3 ‘black British’ men have a caucasian ancestor in their genetic family tree.

A similar survey in 1999 suggested that the increase in sickle cell anaemia amongst ‘white British’ populations was due to the incidence of African ancestry amongst people who were, as far as they and everyone else was concerned ‘white’.

Suggesting that Indian characters can only be brown skinned is a simplistic position to take and it seems that people are being deliberately ignorant just to have a non-topic to shout about.

Sir Ben Kingsley, who was born Krishna Pandit Bhanji has made a living playing quintessentially British men, not to mention several Jewish characters. Dont’ hear anyone getting their knickers in a twist about the ‘Indianisation’ of Jewish film roles. Oh no.

Seems to me some parts of Tumblr aren’t happy unless they have something to be pissed off about.

This was the most fun time I had at the movies in quite a long time. And I love the fact they have a spaceship called USS Bradbury.

The USS Bradbury was an inspired choice. I bounced happily in my seat at that.

Cumberbatch wouldn’t have been my choice to play that particular character, but what jolted me more than the casting was the dialogue they gave him. So far removed from the original version. Maybe they didn’t feel that the poetic, melodramatic style would sit well with modern audiences but I missed all those great monologues that we got in the original version and they missed so much out of the characters back story that you really needed to have seen the original to make sense of who Cumberbatch was playing. I imagine that for non fans the character came across as very badly drawn. In the original it was very difficult not to have a certain amount of sympathy for the character’s rage, afterall he’d lost his wife because of what Starfleet had done to him. That was all missing from this version and it took some of those shades of grey away from the character and made him a lot more black and white and less satisfying as a result.

I Loved Star Trek: Into Darkness...

…but just one small note to the script writers, THAT’S NOT HOW COLD FUSION ~~theoretically~~ WORKS!!

Spock’s interpretation of the Prime Directive was also incorrect but that’s a whole other discussion.

There’s my science gripe for the day. Now back to admiring Kirk and McCoy in those delightful wetsuits.

Ep1.1 of Perception was on UK TV last night. I have stumbled across something new to obsess over during the long wait for Season 2 of Ripper Street and Season 3 of Sherlock.

Obviously I have a huge weakness for dark, handsome, hyper intelligent men in tweed.

Awww, but Reid needs Best. The way their relationship developed over the 8 episodes was understated but brilliant. They started out in a state of mutual loathing but by episode 7 they had both realised that they could be useful to each other and that in many ways their jobs were complimentary.

Metropolitan Police officers of the 1960’s pose in replicas of the first police uniforms. Their CO, in the centre of the shot is wearing a modern uniform. The officer immediately to the right of centre is carrying a rattle in his left hand. This was the standard way of attracting attention for an officer on patrol prior to the introduction of the police whistle. The wearing of tailcoats and top hats was a deliberate move to distinguish the police as a civil rather than military force. The tailcoat morphed over time into a knee length tunic which gradually shortened into the more practical thigh length one of the late nineteenth century.

Watching Ripper Street it intrigued me just how many guns there were in the show and how tolerant Reid was of Jackson carrying his pistol on a regular basis. You see very little mention of gun crime in books on the period and the British Police have a long tradition of going unarmed - except for a night stick - because it’s always been felt that the public would not accept the authority of an armed force on the street. Even establishing an unarmed force was fraught with difficulty at the time because giving one group powers of stop, search and arrest over the rest of the populace was seen as contrary to English ideals of liberty.

I recently found out though that in the 1880’s anyone could carry a firearm in public. Yes, you had to have a firearms licence but all you had to do to get one was stroll in to the post office, hand over a few shillings and they would issue you with a licence to carry a firearm.

It makes the fact that the British police at the time considered it a point of pride that they did their job armed only with a night stick and a whistle even more amazing.

On a related note, you see in Ripper Street one of the earliest designs of police uniforms. If you’ve ever wondered why they had those stand up, mandarin style collars it was because they originally lined them with leather. The first police officers were more worried about being garrotted than being shot so the collars of their uniforms were reinforced. Roving bands of criminal garrotters turned out to be something of an urban myth, largely an invention of the press but the design of the uniforms lingered on.

A fantastic night time image of Puma Court, Whitechapel, taken by Rob Clack. This is taken from the Commercial Street end looking towards Brick Lane. if you’ve been to Whitechapel in the evening you’ll know that Puma Court looks like this even today and has pretty much remained unchanged for 200 years. Along with Fournier Street and Artillery Lane it’s one of the best preserved streets in Whitechapel.
